Family members often keep it secret that they are affected by mental illness. It can be hard to talk about it because you love that person very much, whether you have a brother, son or mother living with mental illness. Staying silent can be about lots of things. It can be about not wanting to be disloyal to the person you love. Or it can be about 'keeping it in the family'. But keeping silent creates lots of problems as family members try to care for the person they love and forget to care for themselves. This is not good for anyone. It's time for people affected by mental illness to start talking about mental health and mental illness in terms of their own well-being. Let's do that!
